Even more Monday’s Pretty Things…
Thanks to each of you who commented telling me which JCP Kids Collection #FirstDayLook you loved most! The Instagram crowd especially got into it, and I have to say, I didn’t expect such a runaway. Almost all of you voted for floral denim. Facebook voters did, too. Crazy, right?
So what did I choose? Well, Aveline definitely went home with “farkley” sparkle shoes and an awesome motorcycle jacket — you thought I was going to say floral denim, didn’t you? Patience, patience! Aveline is thrilled to have a jacket that almost matches her motorcycle-driving papa’s. (The shoes and coat don’t make an appearance in today’s photos, though, ’cause the temperature was over 90° with a heat index of 100°.)
But here’s what we did wear today!

You know when you love something so much you want to share it with everyone so they can enjoy it too? That’s how I feel about Jane Cumberbatch’s Pure Style Online (and her books, too!) Jane’s talent for expressing simplicity through photos and words is unmatched — entering the Pure Style world is like going on a relaxing mini-vacation.
In this and future installments of Conversations with Designers, I’ll be sitting down with various talented bloggers to find out a few tips and tricks of the trade. We can all use some encouragement and inspiration, right?
Jane was gracious enough to take time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions on the topic, which I am thrilled to share with you today…

How long have you been blogging?
Jane: I’ve been blogging properly for 3 or 5 years, although I started my website in 2005.
How would you describe your blog to someone who’d never seen it?
Jane: My blog is like a kind of photographic and written notebook of the simpler things in life that inspire me, such as roses in the garden, a hand crafted piece of furniture or a wonderful fabric print.

Do you remember the first blog that really inspired you?
Jane: I can’t think of one particular blog that really inspired me, it’s more the excitement of being to take my own photographs and have the ability to create stories on online. An amazing leap for me, having worked behind a camera as a stylist for many years.

What are some blogs you read every week?
Jane: I have to say that I don’t really follow other blogs — just not enough time in the day as I’m also running my house as a location for shoots, and what with that working on my new book, walking dog, doing the laundry, etc, etc, etc…I do like catching up though on Remodelista.com for design ideas, and that’snotmyage is inspiring for an over fiftier like me!

What is one thing people might not know about your blogging journey?
Jane: Blogging has been a great way to engage with readers of my books. In the past before authors would only encounter readers at live events — now with blogging I get to engage with people from Swansea to Santiago!
What are your top three tips for other bloggers?
Jane: Be stick to your concept, keep your writing succinct, and be ruthless with editing your pictures — less is more!!
Thank you so much, Jane! Your work is so refreshing and it’s always a pleasure to see your latest.

It’s too quiet. This is a phrase I’ve rarely uttered in the past 2.5 years, but today, in the still of the afternoon heat with Aveline asleep to the hum of the fan, and the house strangely Lauren-less, I find myself whispering, “It’s too quiet.”
My second cuppa gone, I try writing a to-do list, but it’s hard to get back into working mode after so much time off. A whole month in Minnesota — and week here with my best friend — definitely spoiled me.

What do you do to get back into the groove after time off?

I always get excited when the back-to-school sales start. When I was a kid, I’d make sure my folders, pencils and notebooks were color-coded by subject, and then I’d add a matching sticker to the corresponding textbooks. I haven’t outgrown that too much — I’m still an office-supply nerd — and I definitely never outgrew the fresh new-start feeling of the back-to-school season. There’s just something in the air that makes me want to reorganize everything, get dressed up, and then sit down and work like crazy. I’ve got plenty coming up this month, with magazine interviews to write, articles to edit, and a lot of work for my secret project, too.
And then there’s Aveline, whose enthusiasm for “da alphabets” never wanes. She spells everything she sees — loudly, of course — and begs me to write out the letters over and over again. I know this fall is going to include a lot more of “da alphabets” as we delve into letter sounds, phonics, and, oh, counting past thirteen too. For now, we’re savoring summer while singing the ABCs on loop and hanging out with my best friend Lauren, who is vacationing here before launching into the new school year as a staff-member for a study-abroad program.
We three girls have been doing a lot of shopping, and this week we headed to JCPenney to pick out a new back-to-school outfit for Aveline. Aveline’s a perpetual motion machine, and I think the intense color of the changing rooms energized her even more. Phew. She really never stops.
Which #FirstDayLook should Aveline choose?
ONE – Intentionally worn two sizes too large, this modern black and white stripe turns into the perfect toddler maxi. A faux leather jacket completes the look.

TWO – A loose-fitting blouse and cami over cuffed floral denim is a great segue from summer to fall.

THREE – Puppy dog tails and sugar and spice pair up when this boys’ top from the infant section (sleeves are cuffed to 3/4 length) is worn with an off-white tulle skirt.

FOUR – Houndstooth leggings and a ribbed pink tank worn under a faux leather jacket brought out the spontaneous air guitar and crouching tiger — and a James Dean face.

I’m heading back to JCP to pick out Aveline’s #FirstDayLook soon — which outfit is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

Every winter, there’s a whole lotta Scandinavian and Nordic Christmas beauty on this blog. The Scandinavian Christmas series is one of my very favorite blog features — and, judging by the stats, it’s yours, too.
When lovely reader Linnea emailed me photos of her beautiful Swedish Midsommar celebration, I could hardly believe I never thought of having a Scandinavian Summer series as well!
While midsummer is already past, it’s not too late to celebrate, right? Not at all! I’ve just added a Scandinavian Summer category, so if you want to send me your summery photos, feel free! I might feature them. :)
Here’s how Linnea celebrated this year.

Within a few minutes of clicking onto the interwebs this morning, I got all the news. Snowden was released into Russia on temporary asylum. The weather in Orlando is going to be hot and muggy forever. And H&M Home is FINALLY available in the US.
If you know me, you know I’d rather by a rug or a set of curtains than a new pair of shoes or jeans. And I’ve been waiting for H&M Home for quite a while. (Actually, I didn’t wait. I had a UK friend buy a duvet cover there and mail it to me.)
Now join me in drooling over all this available-right-here-right-now goodness — just try not to drool on your keyboard. (Clicking on each photo will take you to the product listing on the H&M website).
I exercised a great deal of restraint by only listing a few products. ;) Go ahead, view ALL the H&M Home things!
