Monday's Pretty Things

MONDAY’S PRETTY THINGS :: Fall, Family, & a Little Bit of Yellow & Blue

This week marks the start of fall here in the Northern Hemisphere, and while Florida’s proximity to the Tropic of Cancer makes the change of seasons less pronounced, the weather is dipping ever so slightly in the autumnal direction. It’s a welcome, if nearly imperceptible change; merely a bit less of an “I’ve instantly been poached” sensation when one steps out of doors.

And while my presence has been scarce here on the blog, it’s been for the best reason possible — family is in town! My heart is beyond happy watching this little face chatter away with “gamma” and “gampa”.

This seasonal shift always makes me think of yellows and blues, despite these hues often being seen as spring colors. But why should they be confined to just one end of the year? Autumn is full of ever deepening blue skies and — in some parts of the world at least — rich golden leaves.

And so here, on a very non-Monday, is a tiny round-up of pretty things.

LITTLE STYLE :: JCP Kids Collection #FirstDayLook

Thanks to each of you who commented telling me which JCP Kids Collection #FirstDayLook you loved most!  The Instagram crowd especially got into it, and I have to say, I didn’t expect such a runaway. Almost all of you voted for floral denim. Facebook voters did, too. Crazy, right?

So what did I choose? Well, Aveline definitely went home with “farkley” sparkle shoes and an awesome motorcycle jacket  — you thought I was going to say floral denim, didn’t you? Patience, patience! Aveline is thrilled to have a jacket that almost matches her motorcycle-driving papa’s. (The shoes and coat don’t make an appearance in today’s photos, though, ’cause the temperature was over 90° with a heat index of 100°.)

But here’s what we did wear today!

LITTLE STYLE :: Which #FirstDayLook Should Aveline Choose?

JCP JCPenney FirstDayLook on the Oaxacaborn blog

I always get excited when the back-to-school sales start. When I was a kid, I’d make sure my folders, pencils and notebooks were color-coded by subject, and then I’d add a matching sticker to the corresponding textbooks. I haven’t outgrown that too much — I’m still an office-supply nerd — and I definitely never outgrew the fresh new-start feeling of the back-to-school season. There’s just something in the air that makes me want to reorganize everything, get dressed up, and then sit down and work like crazy. I’ve got plenty coming up this month, with magazine interviews to write, articles to edit, and a lot of work for my secret project, too.

And then there’s Aveline, whose enthusiasm for “da alphabets” never wanes. She spells everything she sees — loudly, of course — and begs me to write out the letters over and over again. I know this fall is going to include a lot more of “da alphabets” as we delve into letter sounds, phonics, and, oh, counting past thirteen too. For now, we’re savoring summer while singing the ABCs on loop and hanging out with my best friend Lauren, who is vacationing here before launching into the new school year as a staff-member for a study-abroad program.

We three girls have been doing a lot of shopping, and this week we headed to JCPenney to pick out a new back-to-school outfit for Aveline. Aveline’s a perpetual motion machine, and I think the intense color of the changing rooms energized her even more. Phew. She really never stops.

Which #FirstDayLook should Aveline choose?

ONE – Intentionally worn two sizes too large, this modern black and white stripe turns into the perfect toddler maxi. A faux leather jacket completes the look.

TWO – A loose-fitting blouse and cami over cuffed floral denim is a great segue from summer to fall.

THREE – Puppy dog tails and sugar and spice pair up when this boys’ top from the infant section (sleeves are cuffed to 3/4 length) is worn with an off-white tulle skirt.

FOUR – Houndstooth leggings and a ribbed pink tank worn under a faux leather jacket brought out the spontaneous air guitar and crouching tiger — and a James Dean face.

LIFE IN PHOTOS :: Surrender, Flamingos, and Aveline’s Cameo on Disney Baby

It’s taken me two years , but I’m finally accepting Florida for what it is. Funny, isn’t it, that along with the peaceful surrender and acceptance there comes a realization of so.much.beauty. (And yes, I am embarrassed to admit it took me this long. I’m a stubborn soul, and not proud of it.)

Aveline, on the other hand, knows nothing of this hesitation. She’s such an example to me. Aveline teaches me how life is meant to be lived: loudly, fearlessly, with an utterly joyful abandon. Like the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, she’s not worried about tomorrow.

She’s not worried about anything.

She’s a picture of who I want to be in this life: hands outstretched, head thrown back, full of pure unadulterated joy, eyes pointed up and heavenward, fearing nothing on this earth and giving all the glory to Jesus.

P.S. A big welcome and hello to new readers who found this blog via Aveline’s photo appearing in Disney Baby’s What Baby Wore! It’s an honor and I must say, this wee ol’ blog appearing alongside bloggers I so admire is a little crazy to me! Thank you Living on Love for including me.

LIFE IN PHOTOS :: My grapefruit-loving, hat-stealing toddler

Josiah and Aveline at Fountain - photo via the Oaxacaborn blog
We don’t get much of anything I’d call winter in this state, but right now the weather is cool enough to make it home from the Farmers’ Market with produce that’s still raw. Soon enough, the raw veg will inexplicably turn into steamed veg somewhere between the market and home.

The seasons here are so strange.

It’s technically winter now, but even after two years here I still have a hard time figuring out what’s considered a winter vegetable, what produce is best in spring, and what’s in season in the summer.

But it doesn’t take living here very long to discover the dirty little secret about Florida citrus: it really isn’t all that good. It’s true. Almost 90% of Florida’s citrus is grown for juice, not just for plain ol’ eatin’.

But Aveline doesn’t care about any of that. She just wants grapefruit. Hands down, it’s her favorite fruit — she devours it in plain, peeled sections, without sugar.Toddler Style - Aveline in oversized beanie, scarf, and bag

My little grapefruit-lover is also somewhat of thief. She took that hat right off my head, saying sweetly, “Hat wear, mummy?” The scarf is also mine, but at least she pickpocketed it from my dresser, not my neck. “Scarf wear, mummy? I fi’ [find] scarf.”

I don’t mind. I have a daughter who shares my clothes. That’s pretty awesome!
