A Global-Themed Bedroom for a Tiny Adventurer: An Original Interior Design Project

Interior Styling: Gina Munsey | As seen in print edition of Babiekins Magazine

Earlier this year, a kids’ room I styled was featured in the winter print edition of Babiekins Magazine. I shared photos on Instagram and Facebook — but I just realized I never posted any images here on the blog!

It was such a tremendously fun project. I started with the idea of exploring all the different methods of transportation available across the world — ships, camels, elephants, motorbikes. When I walk into this space, I can immediately imagine rattling down the streets of Italy in a Vespa, lifting up high over the ancient ruins of Myanmar’s Bagan in a hot air balloon, or sailing across the waters on a creaky wooden ship.

I tried to pull in as many elements as I could from various countries, too. There’s a doll brought back from a friend’s visit to Kenya, a red and gold bowl and dumpling spoon from Taiwan, pink Hmong textiles, a yellow and fuchsia strand of mirrors and bells originally meant to decorate a camel, an embroidered dress from Guatemala, a row of delightful matryoshka illustrations representing different cultures.

And there’s a cozy reading nook, too, because what better way to transport yourself across time zones and eras than through books?

Thanks to the always-amazing Priscilla Barbosa for capturing this room through her camera lens.

“Wonder Aveline the Super Dog” has finally gone to sleep, Josiah is at a Sigur Rós concert, and I am here in a quiet house with a lovely plate of food and silence.

Maybe I’ll watch a movie, maybe I’ll write a bit more — not here, mind you, but elsewhere, and just for me.

Sometimes I think that’s the only way I’ll ever write a book is if I tell myself all the words are only just for me. Sometimes when I’m writing for you, I let you get in the way. Sometimes you scare me, and I let that fear change how much of the story I tell.

I’ll never write a book if I write it for you.

So maybe tonight I’ll write for me. Maybe I’ll finally open up that lonely document called Chapter One, and maybe I’ll begin it like this:

“I lived in the South the year I turned thirty. At least, I thought it was the south. It was well below the Mason-Dixon line. It dangled into the ocean, for crying out loud; wedged between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. But people said it wasn’t the real South. The real deep South, they told me, was further north. …”

MONDAY’S PRETTY THINGS :: 6 Examples of Foliage Indoors

Cut flowers or branches, a little houseplant on the edge of the sink, herbs in the kitchen — these little touches really brighten a room, don’t they? I have a few potted flowers in ceramic pots on the stoop outside our front door, but nothing inside right now. I should change that!

LIFE IN PHOTOS :: Trying to Get Out of Vacation Mode

It’s too quiet. This is a phrase I’ve rarely uttered in the past 2.5 years, but today, in the still of the afternoon heat with Aveline asleep to the hum of the fan, and the house strangely Lauren-less, I find myself whispering, “It’s too quiet.”

My second cuppa gone, I try writing a to-do list, but it’s hard to get back into working mode after so much time off. A whole month in Minnesota — and week here with my best friend — definitely spoiled me.

INSPIRATION :: H&M Home, Come to Mama!

H&M Home in the US - Oaxacaborn.com's picksWithin a few minutes of clicking onto the interwebs this morning, I got all the news. Snowden was released into Russia on temporary asylum. The weather in Orlando is going to be hot and muggy forever. And H&M Home is FINALLY available in the US.

If you know me, you know I’d rather by a rug or a set of curtains than a new pair of shoes or jeans. And I’ve been waiting for H&M Home for quite a while. (Actually, I didn’t wait. I had a UK friend buy a duvet cover there and mail it to me.)

Now join me in drooling over all this available-right-here-right-now goodness — just try not to drool on your keyboard. (Clicking on each photo will take you to the product listing on the H&M website).

INSPIRATION :: Spring/Summer 2013 Toast UK Home+Home Catalogue

Thanks to these images from Toast UK’s Spring/Summer 2013 Home+Home Catalogue, I’m dreaming of a nice seaside picnic — one that involves crusty bread and jam. And maybe a nap in a breezy riad, waking up to Moroccan mint tea before a boat ride where I just sit on a heap of cushions and don’t have to row at all.

Hey, there aren’t any rules against dreaming, right? :)
