LITTLE STYLE :: Neutrals and Pattern Mixing

Little Style - Toddler Jeans and Cardi - Neutrals- via Oaxacaborn dot com
I love a good, neutral outfit for my girl. With the right shoes — she’d wear sparkly Converse with these — she still looks feminine, but (thankfully!) doesn’t look like a Disney princess exploded in her closet.

I have a similar outfit in my own closet; I pair it with heels in the summer and tall black boots and a black scarf in the winter.

I’ve loved mixing patterns since long before it was a “thing”. Now that it’s in, I have an excuse! I love how the solid green skirt creates a visual break between the two patterns. (Well, actually, the real reason I include the skirt here is because I’m adamant about teaching Aveline leggings are not pants. She might be a member of the under-two set, but the rule still applies. Seriously!)

Submit your Scandinavian Christmas Guest Post!

Submit your Scandinavian Christmas blog post to Oaxacaborn dot com! Illustration of Dala Horse Swedish Christmas by Aina StenbergIllustration by Aina Stenberg (1885-1975)

Just a quick reminder…don’t forget to send me your submissions for the very special Scandinavian/Nordic Christmas series coming up soon! It seems early, but this season gets busy very quickly. I know my calendar is already filling up quickly; yours too?

So, if you have a lovely round-up of wintry images to share (all properly sourced and credited, of course), photographs of your own home, Scandinavian recipes or traditions, a tutorial showing how to make an ornament or pretty giftwrap, decoration ideas — or something else I haven’t thought of — email me (oaxacaborn at gmail dot com).

Content which you’ve already published on your own blog is perfectly fine. And remember, the posts don’t have to be lengthy – a single inspiring image is excellent, as well.

Can’t wait to hear from you. :)

Inspiration, Poetry & Words

INSPIRATION :: Winter 2012 Toast UK Women’s Catalogue

I only like icy landscapes in theory. I can say that with some authority, because I’ve tested the, er, frozen waters. In college, I lived across the street from the Lake Superior shoreline, and meh — not my thing! See, it’s not an urban legend or an exaggeration that humans can have icicles hanging from their personage. Oh, no. That really happens.

Here’s a photo of me, standing on Lake Superior when the ice had already started to break up. It was Easter break, so I’d switched to my “spring” snowpants and coat — and was subsequently frozen to the core. (What was I thinking?! DOES THAT LOOK LIKE SPRING TO YOU?! And who in the world has “spring snowpants”?)

Brrrrrrr. It’s true that the air is amazing and clean, there are myriad stars, and the stillness and quietness overnight are like nothing I’ve experienced elsewhere. But you know? It’s cold. Your car’s doors freeze entirely shut. When you do get the car moving finally, the wheels feel square. The worst part of it all is when the sky and the ground fade together into a dusty, dreary gray, swallowing everything in between them. The sun disappears. Weeks pass before it reappears momentarily, only to slip away again. Sometimes, it’s too cold for snow even to fall.

So when I’m oooh and aaahing over the pretty wintery scenes in Toast UK’s most recent lookbook, I try to remind myself what living inside those pictures really was like, and realize that I’m much happier just looking at the photos*.

*I’ll let you decide how much of that is true and how much is an attempt to convince myself I enjoy sweating in Florida-October’s swampy heat.

INSPIRATION :: Autumn/Winter 2012 Toast UK House + Home Catalogue

We’re still drinking our coffee iced, so these cozy scenes seem like something out of a movie. Some of my family members elsewhere, though, have already had sprinkles of snow and are busy with all the mundane but necessary outdoor chores which accompany winter’s arrival.

I think I’ll stick with my romanticized perspective. ;) Here are my favorite images from Toast‘s Autumn/Winter 2012 collection for House + Home.

CHRISTMAS :: A Fun New Blog Discovered in the Blogosphere – Scandinavian Christmas

I just stumbled across a delightful gem of a blog called (no big surprises here) Scandinavian Christmas. According to the bio, it’s written by “A Swedish-Norwegian family who lives in the very north above the polar circle, and blogs about our favourite season.” It’s brand-new this year, so be sure to go back to the first post (October in the archives). I’m honestly surprised this blog isn’t more popular!

You can visit the site directly,Β grab theΒ Scandinavian Christmas RSS feed to add to your readers, follow Scandinavian Christmas on Bloglovin, or follow AnnaLinda’s Pinterest boards!

[Update: I’m planning a special Scandinavian Christmas series in 2012.]

CHRISTMAS :: Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop :: Christmas Decor, Scandinavian Style

I didn’t get enough white Christmas yesterday with Monday’s Pretty Things :: Scandinavian Christmas, so I thought I’d link up with theΒ Gussy Sews Inspiration WorkshopΒ (which isn’t until Thursday. I scheduled this post a day early. Oops!).

Someday, I think I’d like to have a tree decorated with all white and silver ornaments, and maybe some cranberries. Ahh, dreamy. Right now, though, we have something a little more beautiful than that. ;-) Despite endlessΒ reprimands, Β the toddler-baby removes a rather high percentage of our Christmas tree ornaments on a daily basis, and strands of lights keep burning out. The decor theme, more and more, is looking like dark, blank patches. But when I look at Aveline’s dancing, happy eyes staring up at the tree, the tree is as perfect to me as any in a magazine shoot. Β Oh, I love her!

Winter in Florida :: Aveline’s First Playground Experience

I had so much fun taking Aveline to the playground for the very first time. And doesn’t our Florida winter look rough? Believe it or not, we are so.completely.over the hot, sticky weather and are pining away for cold air. (The long sleeves were just a formality because it’s November. We were actually sweating.)
