POETRY & WORDS :: When it rains

June 2013 - Hanna Andersson star pajamas and Anthropologie Fables and Feathers beddingIt’s 2 am, and I’m awakened to the sound of a sobbing little girl and heavy raindrops beating against the side of the building. She is teething, the rain’s falling from the swirling fingers of a tropical storm, and my head is tired and groggy. I lie still for several minutes, as if by remaining motionless I could somehow will her back to sleep. She shifts from quiet crying to calling out “Mummy!” and in a moment, we are both in her room. She’s upright in her crib, stumbling around half-asleep and half-awake as though the mattress were a ship deck, rolling on the high seas to the sound of the pelting rain.

“Get out,” she asks, stretching out her wobbly hands. “Wear blanket scarf.” I wrap her favorite fuzzy blanket around her the way she wants it, and she reaches her arms toward papa. He holds her while she drinks water, and then she lunges in my direction. “You hold,” she says.

Her tiny hands clasp together behind my neck.  I stretch out on the rug next to her crib, and she nestles her blonde head on my chest, the same way she’s done scores of times since the moment she was born. She moves her ear over my heart, and the rhythm soothes her. We lie there together in the darkness, listening to the staccato of rain and the beat of my heart. She sighs. I close my eyes. She’s tall, and I marvel how her feet stretch down past my knees now.

I think how thankful I am to have her here with me. I think how wonderful it is that when she cries, I can be next to her.

Over the next hour, she alternates between crying and whispering, “Nigh’ nigh’ sleep.” Finally, I hear nothing but the persistent noise coming from the very loud frog claiming squatter’s rights in the second-story rain gutter outside the window.

I close my eyes again, this time in my own bed, and fall asleep to the constant stream of tropical rain.

Today, we decided this was the best way to handle the clouds and the humidity and the mud and the rain.

Today, we decided this is how you embrace what you’re given.

Today, we made the Fed Ex man look at us sideways and made our retired snowbird neighbor burst out laughing.

These are the things which fill a muggy, dark afternoon spring to overflowing.

LIFE IN PHOTOS :: Surrender, Flamingos, and Aveline’s Cameo on Disney Baby

It’s taken me two years , but I’m finally accepting Florida for what it is. Funny, isn’t it, that along with the peaceful surrender and acceptance there comes a realization of so.much.beauty. (And yes, I am embarrassed to admit it took me this long. I’m a stubborn soul, and not proud of it.)

Aveline, on the other hand, knows nothing of this hesitation. She’s such an example to me. Aveline teaches me how life is meant to be lived: loudly, fearlessly, with an utterly joyful abandon. Like the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, she’s not worried about tomorrow.

She’s not worried about anything.

She’s a picture of who I want to be in this life: hands outstretched, head thrown back, full of pure unadulterated joy, eyes pointed up and heavenward, fearing nothing on this earth and giving all the glory to Jesus.

P.S. A big welcome and hello to new readers who found this blog via Aveline’s photo appearing in Disney Baby’s What Baby Wore! It’s an honor and I must say, this wee ol’ blog appearing alongside bloggers I so admire is a little crazy to me! Thank you Living on Love for including me.

LIFE IN PHOTOS :: Turning Cacti Upside-down

Sometimes, on nice evenings, if dinner’s ready and the floodgates of heaven aren’t open, we step outside for a few minutes waiting for Papa to get home.

We talk to ants, point at airplanes, tell birds to hurry up and fly, and ask where all the puddles went.

Sometimes we stop for a moment, pick up our favorite succulent, think…

LIFE IN PHOTOS :: My grapefruit-loving, hat-stealing toddler

We don’t get much of anything I’d call winter in this state, but right now the weather is cool enough to make it home from the Farmers’ Market with produce that’s still raw. Soon enough, the raw veg will inexplicably turn into steamed veg somewhere between the market and home.

The seasons here are so strange.

It’s technically winter now, but even after two years here I still have a hard time figuring out what’s considered a winter vegetable, what produce is best in spring, and what’s in season in the summer.

But it doesn’t take living here very long to discover the dirty little secret about Florida citrus: it really isn’t all that good. It’s true. Almost 90% of Florida’s citrus is grown for juice, not just for plain ol’ eatin’.

But Aveline doesn’t care about any of that. She just wants grapefruit. Hands down, it’s her favorite fruit — she devours it in plain, peeled sections, without sugar.Toddler Style - Aveline in oversized beanie, scarf, and bag

My little grapefruit-lover is also somewhat of thief. She took that hat right off my head, saying sweetly, “Hat wear, mummy?” The scarf is also mine, but at least she pickpocketed it from my dresser, not my neck. “Scarf wear, mummy? I fi’ [find] scarf.”

I don’t mind. I have a daughter who shares my clothes. That’s pretty awesome!

LIFE IN PHOTOS :: Sandcastle Destroyer Extraordinaire

A fun[ny] aspect of living in the tropics is the rather large collection of swimsuits little Miss Alenka has amassed! Today we have the purple one-piece, tied in the back with a headband off of mama’s hair, covered with a ruffled swim diaper, accessorized by pink sunnies, a paisley paci clip, a whole lotta Burt’s Bees sunsreen, and a sandy María.

Eh, it works. ;)
