Fall

It’s a brand-new week; a new dawn, with new mercies. I need that reminder this morning. I need to remember that right here, in Florida, is exactly where we are supposed to be.

I need to remember — “You saw how the Lord your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have walked until you came to this place.” (Deut 1:31)

And I need to remember that He never stops leading us. This is not the end of the story (it never is!) He leads us to the green pastures, by the still waters, through shadowy valleys…

Florida feels surreal, sometimes. It feels like another dimension, like there’s no point of reference for me to really grasp the passage of time. I think I feel this especially acutely this time of year, when I the seasons begin to turn every place except here.

I know Fall is descending gently upon the California coast, like it does every September. I know the nights are slowly getting cooler, and I know a leaf or two is now tinged crimson around the edges. I know what it’s like to watch the first raindrops dance down across the dusty Sacramento valley.

I know this, but here, the southern sky has not changed in months. September’s sky sweeps across the canvas above the same now as it did in April, and every day in between the air has been swollen with moisture, spilled over from rain-soaked clouds. Always it’s hot, always it’s humid, and always the temperature of dusk and dawn are indistinguishable from day.

Last night, as a wave of homesickness washed over me and I just wanted to be home, I asked God for peace. God reminded me of Abraham’s sojourning life. God reminded me that no matter what — Egypt, the Red Sea, the wilderness, the promised land, no matter what — He’s always there, in that pillar of fire.

And so here, now, in this new (humid, hot) morning, I know. He’s here. And I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

‘Little Reader Vintage’ – cute baby clothes on Etsy

You guys. Seriously. Little Reader Vintage is my favorite Etsy store for little people’s vintage clothes. How amazing is this for just $7? All you mamas need to check out her shop; almost all the items are under $10.

Aveline’s New Simple White Dress

After looking at all those beautiful early 1900’s baby clothes in yesterday’s post, I was determined to cross “sew Aveline a dress” off my list of creative goals.

I traced one of Aveline’s dresses onto paper, then used that paper as a pattern/guide to create this new dress. My mom had given me the white cotton, and I already had the daisy fabric (it was a little remmant I found on a sale rack). It’s a little summery, I know; but we live in Florida, so we’ll definitely still be wearing white after Labor Day.

I’m so happy with how it turned out! (Just please don’t inspect the stitching too closely.) As a very beginning sewer, this a big accomplishment to me — even though it might seem like no big deal the sew-my-family’s-entire-wardrobe-while-grinding-flour-from-the-wheat-berries-I-just-harvested types. ;-)

Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop :: [Baby] Vintage

Today is my first time linking up with the weekly Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop. Gussy Sews is hugely inspirational to me — she’s a Michigan girl living in the Twin Cities, who, after teaching herself to sew just three years ago, now runs a very successful handmade business! Each week she chooses a theme for the Inspiration Workshop, and bloggers everywhere participate by sharing their interpretation of that theme. Gussy says,

This week’s prompt is vintage. Do you have a favorite vintage piece of clothing or accessory? How about a favorite vintage shop? Or is there an old car you admire? The possibilities are endless…

Alrighty, then! Let’s get started. No big surprise that I’m interpreting vintage with a baby flair, right?

Reproduction of Vintage 1930s Girl’s White Cotton Dress

I’m especially drawn to the simple designs from the early 1900’s — the ’10s, ’20s, and ’30s. In fact, a very talented friend handmade Aveline a gorgeous little garment fashioned after a 1930’s dress.

Isn’t it lovely? It won’t fit her until she’s a little older, so until then it’s displayed on the wall in her room.

Vintage 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s Baby Dresses and Rompers

I just love old baby clothes. Have you ever browsed the Belle Heir website? It’s so easy to get lost amongst all the pretty vintage baby things. This 1935 number even has the same kind of pintucks as Aveline’s dress!

Here’s a linen romper from 1910 — such delicate embroidery! (That blue section you see around the goose is cross-stitched.)

Don’t you just love the black stitching on this 1930s peach gauze dress?

I like the subtle addition of color with the striped placket on this 1930s linen dress.

Vintage 1930s Knitting Patterns

It’s fun to imagine the little people who wore these outfits. The photographs on vintage patterns, like these 1930s Bairns-Wear Knitting Wools pieces from the Vintage Knitting Lady, give a little peek into what the wee girls and boys might have looked like. I gotta admit the recurring appearance of nuns made me giggle.

Now I’m completely and totally inspired to make Aveline a dress like I mentioned in my creative goals for the remainder of 2011. Off to look through my stack of fabric!

My Friday Afternoon Wish List

My Friday afternoon wish list? It isn’t lengthy or elaborate. It contains precisely one item, which, if you replaced Aveline with me and replaced the crib with my bed, it would look exactly like this:

Six month old baby Aveline sleeping peacefully in crib, holding baby blanket, wearing Trumpette socks

Baby's arm holding baby blanket

Of course, I didn’t sleep while Aveline napped. Oh, nooo. I ran around the house with cleaning supplies, scrubbing faucets and sinks instead.

Sigh.

Your Summer Photo Favorites!

When I put out the call for your favorite summer photos, fellow Floridian Drea of Ohdeardrea sent me these absolutely gorgeous shots. (They were actually taken in winter, but shhhh…don’t tell. It’ll be our secret.)

Now how absurdly cute are Emma and Spencer? Their dad, Aaron Klein, is always tweeting the adorable things these two say. I especially love what Aaron writes about orphan care and adoption.

And finally, my coffee-drinking pal Dina sent me this shot of her fiancé, saying, “My sweet man can sleep anywhere, as well as multitask; slumber whilst petting the pooch.” She doesn’t have a blog, but she is planning a wedding and curating her (stunning!) wedding inspiration over on Pinterest.

LITTLE STYLE :: Aveline’s Room (and her newest Felted Owl!)

Good morning! We’re way overdue for a little sneak peek at Aveline’s room, right? I don’t think I’ve posted any pictures of it since we moved to Florida.

I recently won this adorable little handmade felted owl from a BlissFull Essence / Evenswood Owlbums giveaway. Isn’t he ridiculously cute?  I told Christine I’d send her photos of the little fellow in his new home, and I thought I’d share them with you as well.

We seem to be amassing a collection of owls, which I am totally okay with. (Remember the hand-appliqued owl onesie?)

Here’s the little owl on top of Aveline’s dresser next to Lotta from Charlie and Lola and some Urban Outfitters Owlets (no longer in stock). I don’t remember where we purchased the plush lemur.

Aveline hasn’t officially moved into her room yet (her crib is still next to our bed), so her room doubles as a guest space. My mom handmade the gorgeous duvet cover you see below.

We love textiles and books around here! My mother-in-law made this beautiful quilt — you can usually find out on our living room floor with a little Aveline on top of it.

I’d love to see how you’ve decorated your little ones’ spaces — if you have a blog post about it, leave the link in the comments!
