How I Quit Cloth Diapering (and Faced the Mama Mafia)

The cost of using cloth diapers vs the cost of using disposable diapers I quit cloth diapering.

There, I said it. The cat’s out of the bag.

Actually, I quit at the end of January. I’ve kept it a secret all this time. I’ve been careful not to talk about it. I’ve been careful not to post any photos of Aveline in which she’s obviously wearing a disposable.

Why did I hide it? Because I was afraid of the backlash. I was afraid of the Mama Mafia.

The Mama Mafia is brutal.

But this week, I made another decision. I decided I’m not going to be intimidated, nor am I going to make excuses. I’m going to be honest. Because truthfully? Cloth diapers are gross.

Before you stick your hand through your computer screen to grab me by the throat, let me say that again. Cloth diapers are gross. They just are. It’s a fact you can’t really argue with. You can downplay it and talk yourself through it in order to save money, but you can’t deny it.

I reached a point, nearly a year in to cloth diapering, when I asked myself, “Ok, how much money am I actually saving?”

And so The Great Disposable Experiment began. At the end of the trial period, here’s what I learned.

The Cost of Cloth Diapers vs. The Cost of Disposables

  • It cost approximately $5.63/week ($22.50/month) on electricity, water/sewer, and detergent to use cloth diapers.
  • It cost approximately $6.25/week ($25.00/month) to use disposable diapers.

And that’s not even counting the hundreds of dollars I spent purchasing (used, not new) cloth diapers.

A savings of $2.50/month? I quit cloth diapering.

Fellow mamas, let’s be brave. Let’s be free. I’m done hiding behind the mask of fear. My baby wears disposables. Now you know.

And you know what? I’m ok with that!

I’m guest blogging on the Grace-Filled Blog today, while Erin takes some time off with her family to welcome her new baby boy. Congratulations!

WRITING & WORDS :: Morning, in Which I Pull Letters into Words so you can Read Them /or/ The Humble Beginnings of a Magazine Article

Guatemala Coffee Sack of Burlap 150 lbs

It’s a rare morning, this. Up earlier than the baby, and unable to fall back asleep, I pull the lace-trimmed sheets back up to my chin.

I roll over and reach for my iDevice, and touch the screen to open the YouVersion app. I will my eyes to focus, and read out loud quietly.

“When the Cloud lifted above the Tent, the People of Israel marched out; and when the Cloud descended the people camped….It made no difference whether the Cloud hovered over The Dwelling for two days or a month or a year, as long as the Cloud was there, they were there. And when the Cloud went up, they got up and marched. They camped at God’s command and they marched at God’s command.” -Numbers 9

“I like that the longest time listed is a year”, says Josiah. I smile.

“I’m serious,” he continues. “It’s nice that it doesn’t say, ‘…ten years’ or something.”

I nod, and look back at the passage. I don’t always know why we are here. But I know God’s presence is here. I like that. I like knowing that. He leads us.

I get out of bed, sleepy but happy.

“Let’s have coffee?” I ask hopefully. He always makes the coffee.

I stare out the window, watching the light at the toll booth turn red, green, red. Every so often, a car speeds through without paying and the light stays red.

Words tumble in my mind, as I mentally start sorting sentences for the magazine articles I am working on. I sit down at the table, and start to scratch out words the old-fashioned way, with a pen. I move words around with a ink-drawn arrow, not a virtual one.

Drafting Article for Magazine

Slowly, the words begin to flow. I feel a sudden surge of excitement; I might actually be able to knock these articles out this morning! And then, just a few sentences in, I sneeze involuntarily, and my sneeze is echoed by Aveline’s sudden cry.

I can’t help but smile, even as I shake my head in disbelief.

I close my notebook.

“Good morning, Aveline!” I call out as I walk through the sunshine to her bedroom door.

Until I sit down again, these sentences will be calling to me, waiting for me to pull each of these letters and words into living stories so you can drink them in.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT :: Introducing Marie & Sarah of “A Sea Apart: Two Sisters, Two Countries, Two Photos a Day”

We’re on a roll this week with the California + Europe collaborations! Earlier, we heard from Ma Nouvelle Mode’s Natalia (France) and Christie (California), and today I’m excited to introduce you to a favorite new blog hailing from Moldova and California, A Sea Apart: Two Sisters, Two Countries, Two Photos a Day.

Marie and Sarah, the sisters behind the photo project, are dear, wonderful people, and — an increasingly rare thing in this age of social networking — I actually can say I know them in real life! ;) It’s been far too long since I’ve seen either of them, though; Moldova, Southern California, and Florida are not exactly next door to each other. Anyway, here are Moldova Marie and SoCal Sarah (he he) to tell you a little about themselves and share a few favorite images. Thanks, girls!

Sarah - Bio Photo - A Sea Apart - Two Sisters, Two Countries, Two Photos A Day
Sarah: I am the younger, taller sister. I’m supposed to be gluten and dairy free but I never stick to it 100% until I’m sick, then I feel sorry for myself and am really good about it for a month or so. I work at an amazing website company and my office is only a 7 minute drive from my house. I enjoy and am trying to become better about cooking a gluten/dairy free meal for myself every night. If I could pick any career, it would be a stay at home Auntie! You think I’m joking, but I couldn’t be more serious. I have the most incredible nieces and nephew and I like to think I am the best stay at home Auntie in the world.

I moved to Southern California three and a half years ago to be near my sister and her newborn baby. We weren’t close before I moved but I had always known that once my sister started her family I would need to relocate and be close to them so that I wasn’t the “strange aunt they barely knew”. I eventually moved in with Marie and her family and lived with them for exactly one year before they moved away, she became my best of friends and her girls were my girls. Now, my sister has moved and taken her kids {yes and the husband} to a country on the other side of the world. Marie came up with the idea of our blog last summer. It started off as a 365 day photo project and has turned into an excuse for us to talk every single day even though we are 6,480 miles apart!

Marie - Bio Photo - A Sea Apart - Two Sisters, Two Countries, Two Photos A Day

Marie: I am the older, shorter sister. I have the eyebrow ring, she has the nose ring. I’ve managed to make two babies now with the same food allergies as me so we must have something genetic going on. Living in Moldova and successfully being gluten/corn free has it’s challenges but I’m learning. I have a handsome husband who let’s me stay crazy and crafty plus he washes a mean sink of dishes out of his love for me. I have a three year old daughter (Addy) who is smart, sassy and a developing little artist. I have a nine month old daughter (Mercy) who is currently making me go grey. She’s been crawling since five months and is currently conquering running before ten months. She also eats every thing in sight except for food.

I moved to Southern California almost seven years ago because I needed a “post-college-change.” I think what I really did was grow up and learn to be comfortable with who I was. When Sarah moved down south, I was skeptical because we hadn’t been close as kids. What followed were three crazy years of trials, tribulations and best friendships forming. Our last year in Southern California, Sarah lived with us and it was more fun than being kids again! Moving to Eastern Europe without her wasn’t quite what I imagined but capturing our daily activities with our cameras and sharing it with each other helps a lot.
