TRAVEL :: Cars, Tricycles, and Snowmobiles

Did you know in some places, the Google Street View car is actually…a tricycle? Here’s a Google trike in action, in a remote seaside Canadian village above the Artic Circle.

P.S. There are also Google Street View snowmobiles! Have you even driven/ridden a snowmobile? I happen to think it’s tons of fun — especially with family, in the middle of the forest, where you can’t really hear anything else except the sound of your own laughter.

Handmade

HANDMADE :: Ch-ch-changes.

Owl Hats as seen on Oaxacaborn dot comI’ve decided to change things up a bit when it comes to the products in my shop. The (exciting!) vision I have for the new look was reaffirmed by this discussion last Friday. So, I’ll be slowly listing the rest of what’s now the old style at discounted prices until they’re gone. (I’m not phasing out the owls…no way! But you will see a shift toward lighter, more monochromatic color choices.)

(WHOA. The “older style” hat in the photo above? It sold while I was typing this. I’m constantly humbled by the overwhelming support you all show my little endeavors!)

MONDAY’S PRETTY THINGS :: An Antidote for Stormy Weather

Cynthia Rowley's home via The GlowImage of Cynthia Rowley’s home, as photographed for The Glow

How’s the weather where you are? I’m definitely appreciating coffee this morning, as we were woken repeatedly last night because of Tropical Storm Isaac-induced 50mph winds and rains. (Three cheers for Aveline, who quickly fell back asleep on her own each time she awoke!) This morning it’s oddly dark; the thick cloud cover isn’t letting a bit of light in. The scene is very much the opposite of the above image!

Squalls are expected to continue throughout the day today, so to counteract the dark rain beating against the windows — and before we lose power! Josiah just texted to tell me there is a partial power outage at work — I thought I’d share a lineup of things which are nice and calming. Pretty things such as…

I think it would look charming covering a single wall in a guest room — you know, in that dream world where we all have an extra room to decorate in Parisian vintage decor. :)

Hope your Monday is lovely, friends!

P.S. If you enjoyed this edition of Monday’s Pretty Things, you might want to have a little look at some of these, too.

Inspiration

INSPIRATION :: Greta Garbo…and Astrid Lindgren

Did you know that in Sweden, the new 20 Kronor bill will be light purple and feature a picture of Pippi Longstocking creator Astrid Lindgren? And there will soon be a blue 100 kronor bill with Greta Garbo’s portrait!

Here in the United States, authors of children’s literature and movie stars aren’t people we’d ever think to associate with paper money. But I kind of really love it, don’t you?

Handmade

HANDMADE :: I think yes. Especially with feathers.

Handmade fabric doll with felt feather headband, as made by Oaxacaborn dot com

This took some fiddling to get all stitched up, but I think I’ve got the basic method down. A few more tweaks to the next fabric doll, perhaps, like a narrower body and arms. I do love the felt feathers and the hand-embroidered face; I don’t think I’ll change that for the next one. A lot more fun than folding laundry, although I admit I was twitching a bit knowing that there were undone chores while I was sewing away. :)
