POETRY & WORDS :: In which we suddenly start school

2 - Preschool at Home - Oaxacaborn blog

Today, under the cover of an indecisive grey-and-blue sky on an otherwise uneventful morning, Aveline I got out the books and she started preschool.

This wasn’t a part of any grand scheme or as a result of any thought-out plans I had for March 2014. In fact, I kind of imagined her in a little class in the near future. But this was — is — a part of life and its ebb and flow; part of the surges and the pauses that make up this winding road.

For weeks now, I haven’t been able to keep her in printables. She’d trace the letters and numbers as soon as printed the worksheets, begging for more numbers, more letters, more words, asking “What’s it mean? What’s it mean? How many numbers is this? What’s it say?”

So I kept printing out worksheets, and in a moment of desperation while ordering preschool workbooks and realizing she wasn’t eligible for Pre-K until Fall 2015, I fired up kids’ Mandarin lessons on YouTube as a diversion.

While we waited for book orders to arrive, she latched onto Chinese. One week in, she requested miàn tiáo [noodles] for dinner. Two weeks in, she woke up singing Happy Birthday in Chinese.

See, the thing about kids is, they’re kind of unpredictable. We can make plans about what we think we might do with them, how we think they might act, what we think they might like, and when it’s all going to happen — but the truth is, we have no idea. Absolutely no idea.

The last of the workbooks came in the mail yesterday, as well as Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons and Practical Chinese (the last book is a little advanced for her right now, but I need a guidebook for myself).

Right away this morning, before I had even gotten out of bed, a small person appeared at my bedside, asking to trace letters and do school. And so, after breakfast, we began this journey into phonics and reading, counting and math, characters and pinyin.

A month ago, I wouldn’t have predicted this time to come so soon. But I love the places life takes us, and I love watching as my daughter’s distinct self emerges. She’s her own person; she is not me. (Note to self: I think this is probably an important point worth hanging on to as she grows older.) Right now, she’s here in front of me, looking to me and asking me to guide her. And when (i.e., every single day) I feel the weight of this sacred responsibility, I can ask wisdom of One who freely gives.

And He will meet me, He will answer me, and He will sustain me.

INSPIRATION :: Inside The Kinfolk Table

It’s a cookbook, yes; but more than that, it’s a story of people. It’s a story of homes from Brooklyn to Copenhagen to Portland, where people linger, laughing, over favorite meals. The Kinfolk Table is a song to warm kitchens everywhere, where the food is exquisite, where you are wholly present, and no one notices if the Christmas napkins are still in rotation (mine are).

So, pause. Make this the year you live intentionally. Take an extra half an hour to make your favorite biscuit recipe. And then when they’re still warm, pull a book off the shelf, sit down, and breathe.

You might not have time for this.

In the end, you might have a flour-covered three-year-old, crumbs all over your shirt,  a sink full of dishes, unanswered emails, and clothes waiting in the dryer (not pictured).

But I’ll let you decide if it was worth it.

LIFE IN PHOTOS :: Aveline Turns Three

Aveline’s birthday was on Sunday. Since she’s now three, she decided she would choose the pose for her birthday portrait. Alrighty, then! (She asked to wear that particular “pah-ty dwess” too.)

She’s literally been talking about “berfdays” for one whole year. She loved the party she had in California last year, so much so that it’s been a nearly daily topic of conversation. And then my dad celebrated his birthday here in October, which set off birthday fever again.

But Sunday was Aveline’s day, and she was completely overwhelmed with excitement. She wished us “happy berfday” dozens and dozens of times throughout the day. And three balloons, she decided, could only mean one thing — one is for Aveline, one is for papa, and one is for mama.

That night, she stayed awake in her bed for two hours after bedtime, happy as a lark, singing happy birthday to herself.

Oh, what a little beacon of light and joy she is! Thank you God, for allowing me to be her mother for such a time as this.

She finds her way into our bed every morning, her stuffed “Mister Fox” in one hand and a whole cascade of giggles filling the space around her.

It’s Josiah that carries her into our room, between the pressing down of the glass-and-silver French Press, and the deft opening of the blinds.

And we start every day this way, with laughter that’s a necessary antidote to my morning-challenged self.

God knows exactly what we need.

Every day is full to overflowing with this big personality of hers. It fills the room, it fills my heart, and the soundwaves definitely fill my ears. I can’t even begin to wrap my head around how many times she asked me yesterday, “What’s zis lo name, mummy? What’s zis lo name?” I tell her it’s “mummy”, and…she isn’t buying it.

We work on together, through the day, while Josiah is at work, our days filled with the chores that keep the home humming, errands out into tropical air that confuses our Christmas-leaning brains, and more beads and crayons and alphabets that you could ever imagine.

Yesterday, I added another item to our daily routine, too, with the launch of a brand-new children’s clothing website, LENKA AND THE FAWN. (Eeeee!) I can’t believe that in June, it all began with this simple poll and now, in November, the concept has grown into a real, live, working retail shop.

If you’ve been reading Oaxacaborn for a while, you know my story. You know I was born in Mexico, lived in the former Yugoslavia in Europe and then came to America right before I turned 8. Lenka and the Fawn is an extension of that story.

And if you like, you can read more here.

INSPIRATION :: Famous Paintings as Sidewalk Chalk Art

I hardly ever post mobile photographs here — I think low-res images are better suited to Instagram than blogs — but I couldn’t resist sharing this chalk art!

My mind can hardly wrap around such talent.  It’s the transitory nature of this medium that is the most profound to me, I think. The image will only last a short time. The artists know this work is temporary, and yet create greatness anyway.Jack Vetriano - Chalk Art at Downtown Disney in FloridaJack Vetriano - Chalk Art at Downtown Disney in FloridaModa Baiana - Chalk Art at Downtown Disney in FloridaCollie - Chalk Art at Downtown Disney in FloridaDegas - Chalk Art at Downtown Disney in FloridaChalk Art at Downtown Disney in Florida

You Have A Voice. Use It.

Since I was a little girl and first began to know of wrongs, I have been burdened. I look around me, I listen, I see, and I am weighted down.

There is so much need, so much injustice, so many faces that stare back at me from across the world, so much I cannot do.

But then I hear a voice, speaking to me, saying:

You have a voice.

Use it.

Else you are like a camera which does not see…

You have a voice. Use it.

…a strap which does not carry…

1000 px - 4 - You have a voice. Use it

…instruments which do not write…

You have a voice. Use it.

…stars which do not shine light.

You have a voice. Use it.

Speak up for those who are voiceless, those who cannot tell their story.

They have a story waiting to be told.

Tell it.

Speak.

Do not always remain silent.

“Learn to do right; seek justice.
Defend the oppressed.
Take up the cause of the fatherless;
plead the case of the widow. “-Isaiah 1:17

“For if you remain silent at this time … you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”-Esther 4:14

How will you use your voice today?
