HANDMADE :: Kawaii Plush Creature – Bear Monster with Open Arms

Well, someone must have put magical elf sprinkles in my coffee after all, because I finished the little plush creature I was making. (Just don’t ask about the 137,421 loose ends on the four-color striped cardigan, ok? Especially don’t ask whether or not the sleeve sections ended up being the right size when I went to piece them all together.)

But back to the creature. I went on a cute and pink overload making this (my first one ever), and you know what? I love it.

HANDMADE :: Bold Modern Granny Stripe Baby Blanket – And New Items in the Shop for 2012

Bold Striped Baby Blanket 1 - Granny Stripe Crochet - Chenille, alpaca, and wool in blues and purples

It’s been a while since I shared any crochet project here other than my owl hats. But, I’ve been working on this blanket for a while now, and finally finished it up and mailed it off last week. It’s worked in granny stripes, but I think the mixed textures and varying stripe width  gives it a more modern look than you’d expect.

I’m tossing around the idea of selling similar baby blankets in 2012. I haven’t really done any market research yet to determine what would be most likely to sell, though, and I would still have to work out a price point.

I’ve got another striped wool blanket in progress — this time in bold solid colors — but we’ll see if it ends up in Aveline’s room or in the shop. ;-)

In 2012, the shop will also see the addition of plush / stuffed creatures! Super exciting, right? I’ve been so inspired by these plush/softies. I’m making a crochet and felt monster for Aveline, so I’ll post photos of that in the near future as well (although probably not until after Christmas, unless someone puts magical elf sprinkles in my coffee before then).

What do you guys think? Is there is something specific you’d like to see in the shop in 2012?

My camera would have captured stillness, quiet wind

I didn’t carry my camera with me everywhere, this weekend. But if I did, the photos would have captured Aveline giggling as she reached out her hands to her papa, and then to me, and then to her papa again, delighted that she figured out how to be passed quickly between us.

They would have captured the wrinkled up expression on her face as she tasted a French fry.

They would have captured the deep boom of drums during a Japanese cultural performance we just happened to stumble upon during an afternoon walk.

And then, they would have captured stillness.

Quiet wind.

Early sunset and the ensuing wintry darkness which wrapped around the house like an old, familiar friend.

“Factory Second” Baby Owl Hat // Size 3mo // $10pp

Owl Ear Flap Hat - 3 months - Oaxacaborn - FOR SALE $12 postage paid

This little handmade earflap hat won’t be listed in the Etsy shop, since Aveline wore it twice back when it still fit her. It’s made from two strands of orange and green cotton with a cream bouclé strand woven in. Due to the bulky stitch, it has a couple of slight imperfections (you can see a few gaps between the stitches in the photo above). The owl is fashioned from recycled felt and is securely handstiched with vintage silk thread.

The hat will fit size 3 months as the hat circumference is just over 15 1/2″ unstretched. I’m selling it for $10 postage paid — first come, first serve!

My morning in pictures. Except, in interest of full disclosure, the following things have remained unphotographed:

  • my impressive bedhead (well, you can kinda see it in the Coldplay CD cover)
  • the displeased squawking sound Aveline makes when I don’t cut up her fried plantain pieces fast enough
  • piles of partially-sorted laundry near the washer
  • the rumpled, unmade bed
I could go on, but I think you get the point ;-)

The Seafaring Owl

Oooh, it is so fun to see photos of people wearing items you’ve made! You creative people know what I mean. :-)

This particular hat was a custom order for a yellow-striped hat incorporating both an owl and an anchor. Of course, I couldn’t help but dub him “The Seafaring Owl”.

And isn’t Kalie beautiful? She took these photos as a part of a 365 Photo Challenge.

Baby owl hats now available on Green by USA as well as Etsy!

You might have seen me post on Facebook or Twitter recently about Green by USA, a new website which offers green, American-made products from a variety of vendors. Well, when Tina — an old family friend, miltary wife, and babywearing, cloth-diapering mama of 3 — asked me if I wanted to sell a line of natural-fiber hats on the site, of course I said yes! (This new line is in addition to my Etsy shop).

So check out Green by USA, and be sure to leave them some love on Facebook.
