LIFE IN PHOTOS :: Summer Shadows

Summer Shadows

We’re in Minnesota right now, and I’m thoroughly enjoying this (entirely unintentional) break from blogging. I’m still carrying my iPod everywhere, though, so you can follow me on Instagram if you’d like to keep up with some of our summer vacation moments.

Hope you’re all enjoying a terrific July!

INSPIRATION :: Babiekins Magazine Print Issue Hits Stores June 24

Babiekins Print Issue 2 - Available on newsstands 24 June 2013Mark your calendars, ladies and gents! I’m excited to announce the newest PRINT issue of Babiekins Magazine is set to hit newsstands June 24! It’ll be available ’round the world (Barnes & Nobles, Books-a-Million, and select Target stores in the US), but if you can’t find a copy in your part of the globe, let me know and I’ll help you find one.

For this issue, I interviewed some of my very favorite Instagram mamas — Whitney Reeder @whitneyreeder, Deborah Gordon @apieceofcake82, and Claire Moir @dancelittleliar (thank you ladies!)

I also talked with Sue Kleine @sueshine about her precious autistic daughter Sammy Lu in one of the most heartwarming interviews I’ve ever had the privilege to be a part of. On the fashion front, I chatted with Katherine of the American children’s label Wovenplay — and oh yes, Aveline’s airline travel antics make an appearance in these pages too.

And the photography this time around? Just plain-old gorgeous. Wait until you see Deb Schwedhelm’s editorial!

There’s more, but I wouldn’t want to spoil all the surprises, would I? Suffice to say the amazing people who put this issue together are quite possibly the most talented and creative magazine team out there (why yes, I am biased.) I’m so delighted to be a part of a project like this!

New Converse for the little girl, a 1951 map of Central Europe, and nail polish I thought was black (it wasn’t).

I’m not always sure if I should post Instagram photos here or not. They don’t seem strictly “blog-worthy”, but I want to share more snapshots of personal life on the blog this year, and I don’t always have my camera with me.

LIFE IN PHOTOS :: Corners of our Home at the Start of 2012: Instagram Snapshots

I’ve been busy this month cleaning, sorting, and de-cluttering — a really great start to 2012! Here are a handful of snapshots from around the house, snagged from my Instagram feed.

View from our bedroom, looking out into the living room. Taken the first night back in Florida after Christmas vacation

This is the cozy view through our bedroom door, looking into the living room. I took this the first night we were back in Florida after Christmas break.

I really want to leave these lights up forever. It's always so sad when they're taken down after Christmas.

I think I’d like to keep these lights up forever. It always seems so sad and dark in January when the lights are packed away.

Top of my dresser with London grid art via TexturedINK on Etsy. I need to pick up some frames so I can hang these prints!

The top of my dresser –the amazing London grid art is from TexturedINK on Etsy (and I won it via a giveaway on the Happy Interior Blog!) I really need to pick up some frames. I’ll have to post some additional photos once I get the art hung properly.

Seriously, is there anything better than salsa?

I mean, really, is there anything better than salsa? I’ve been eating it with every meal lately.

Working on the first Japanese-inspired creature of 2012. This will be in the shop later this year. The first one is for Aveline's first birthday!

I worked on this little Japanese-inspired creature over the weekend. Aveline will get this particular one for her first birthday (which is on the 19th. THIS MONTH. Ahhhhh!), and I’ll list subsequent ones in the Oaxacaborn shop. (Did you see the kawaii plush I made her for Christmas?)

A rare cool fog which makes me miss the California coast like crazy.

This morning’s rare and heart-breakingly beautiful fog made me miss the California coast something awful. Someday, someday.

Just got these three strands of beads in the mail from Nakate Project. LOVE this cause!

And oh yes, last by not least, my new Nakate Project beads. I love that purchasing these beautiful necklaces helps women in Uganda eat properly, put a roof over their heads, send their children to school, and start small businesses. (P.S. Right now the ENTIRE Nakate store is 50% off when you use the code NEWYEARSALE.)

Full disclosure: Yes, I am the Systems Administrator for Nakate, but I’m not being compensated in any way for my posts about them. I talk about Nakate often because it’s important to me, not because I have to. :)

My little shopping buddy

My little shopping buddy

Ok, I know I’m biased…but how ridiculously cute is my little shopping buddy?! I think she knows it, too. We just got back from a very fun Starbucks/mall playdate — she stared, open-mouthed, at the other baby the entire time.

P.S. Grandma S and Great-Grandma C, thank you for this new dress. We had a hard time choosing what to wear from all the adorable new outfits you just sent her!

Being the only grandchild is such a tough life.

a spring vacation week with lauren: the instagram version

this week was amazing. my lovely friend lauren–who was a bridesmaid in my wedding–came to visit! i haven’t seen her since 2008, so (obviously!) this was her first time meeting aveline.

they got along smashingly. lauren was so patient with the fact that aveline’s naplessness and teething took precedence over going out and about. so, we settled in on the couch and took turns holding aveline while drinking iced coffees, tweeting to each other, and watching back to back (to back) episodes of say yes to the dress. (ssshhh, don’t tell.)

we did have a few outings. it’s always fun to wander around ross, right? especially when you’re with a friend, and you get the giggles upon spotting the creepiest clearance rack ever. i mean, seriously! how can this get much worse? mr. chipped-ear-elephant gave me the willies. and why exactly is he giving the bottle of yeast the eye?

we also drove downtown and took a lovely walk around lake eola. in all the times i’ve been there, i’ve never noticed this monument to the confederate states. it kind of blew my mind. i should have taken a photo of the inscription on the base of the monument. a lot of people will argue that florida isn’t really the true south, but if that’s the case, why are they celebrating the confederacy every time i turn around? i’ve seen more confederate flags here than any other place i’ve ever lived. it’s bizarre.

but i digress…

while lauren was here, we also drove to the coast and spend the afternoon at cocoa beach. this beach as a special place in my heart, as my family came here on an amazing vacation when i was 16 years old, and it’s where josiah proposed in 2008. this time, we introduced little aveline to the ocean for the very first time.

she was dressed as lawrence of arabia for the majority of the time, but i think she enjoyed herself. it was a gorgeous, beautiful day. i just love the florida coast. as i was sitting on the beach looking out over the rolling crystal blue waves, i commented to josiah that as awesome as california is, i really do love florida and i wouldn’t mind living here for years. i see beauty everwhere here now. i know God has done a work in my heart, as i really am so content and happy here this time around — and it wasn’t like that at all before. thank you, Lord, for this wonderful peace.

doesn’t lauren look every part the doting auntie? we had an amazing time together.
